Swartberg Trivia
The Karoo, derived from the Khoikhoi word “Karusa” meaning “dry land,” is a vast semi-desert known for its stark beauty, open skies, and ancient landscapes. Once part of a prehistoric inland sea over 250 million years ago, the Karoo is now rich in fossils, especially from the Permian period — making it one of the most important fossil sites in the world.
Historically, the area was inhabited by the San and Khoikhoi people, who left behind a legacy of rock art and a deep knowledge of the land. With the arrival of Dutch settlers in the 17th and 18th centuries, the Karoo became central to sheep farming, particularly for Merino wool and Karoo lamb. Its isolated towns, such as Prince Albert from which you will depart from on day 4, grew as frontier settlements during colonial expansion.
Today, the Karoo is a region of cultural heritage, wildlife conservation, and rural charm — This day offers a unique blend of history, natural wonder, and quiet resilience as you meander your way into the small town of Klaarstroom. Where a well deserved surprise awaits you.
